What formula can be used to blow a huge bubble that breaks the world record?
The bubble of the world record is really big.
how to make bubble water can blow the largest and strongest bubble? It seems that someone has asked this question before, and today I happened to see a related paper (preprint), which has been verified by some experiments to share it.
first of all, how big is the world's largest soap bubble? The current Guinness Book of World Records was set by GARY PEARLMAN in 2015, who used a huge wireframe dipped in bubble solution to successfully create a huge bubble with a volume of about 96.27m3:
before the researchers carried out scientific verification, enthusiasts of soap bubbles have already had a lot of experience in configuring bubble water. Unlike the recommendations of many small experimental websites, they point out that adding glycerin to detergent solutions is not of obvious use, and that the key to greatly increasing the life of soap bubbles is another class of things: water-soluble macromolecular polymers, such as guar gum (the recommended addition is 1.0-2.0g /L), or polyethylene glycol (bubble enthusiasts often choose to add a product called "J-Lube". Of which 25% is polyethylene glycol, usually 0.1-0.4 g /L is added to the bubble solution. Another experience from these people is that they put the powder containing polyethylene glycol for a time to "age", saying it will make the effect better.
and the paper I read is intended to answer the question of "why" behind these experiences. Referring to the formula provided by enthusiasts, they carried out a series of quantitative experiments, including measuring the life of soap bubble liquid film and the change of liquid film thickness over time.
there are two main interesting findings in this paper. First of all, the soap bubble film does not become significantly thicker after the addition of polymer, but it does become significantly less prone to rupture. Macromolecular polymers mainly change the "tensile rheology" of the liquid film, making it harder for the fluid to break when stretched (which reflects the viscoelasticity of the polymer solution, imagine what mucus wire is drawing looks like something like that).
secondly, what fans say is that putting polyethylene glycol for some time to "aging" is effective. In the experiment in this paper, the polyethylene glycol powder was placed for six months. In this process, these macromolecules will be degraded to a certain extent under the action of light and heat, resulting in a mixture of molecules of different sizes. The experiment found that it is better to use this additive to strengthen the soap bubble film, and the authors speculate that the smaller molecules have a certain degree of attraction and connection between the larger molecules (although they have not yet verified this). This effect can also be achieved by directly mixing polyethylene glycol with different molecular weights.
